Plusbreed Heroes

Mabel & Blue Peter

Mabel & Blue Peter

The current Blue Peter plusbreed who inspires so many children to want and look after their own pet. For many years , right back to "Petra" then "Patch" the programme has encouraged the positive aspects of owning pets whilst not understating the care that they need. Keep up the good work!

Higgins

Higgins

Not a name that easily springs to mind. However Higgins is much better known by his film name of "Benji", star of the film of the same name in 1974 and precursor to several others. To our knowledge Higgins was the only dog who could open a mailbox and an envelope while perfoming a range of facial expressions- unless of course you know different?

Buster and Paul O'Grady

Buster and Paul O'Grady

Here we have a pair of heroes. Buster was the unflappable plusbreed who remained calm despite the laughter and chaos around him. Paul, although only the junior partner is also worthy of a mention as his show had a regular feature showing dogs in need of rescue. Their relationship was a great demonstration of the joy that owning a plusbreed can bring. Sadly Buster passed away last year but Paul now has,"Bullseye" who looks to be a great companion in the making.

Pickles

Pickles

In 1966 Pickles became the hero of England after finding the previously stolen 'Jules Rimet' football world cup. The cup had been taken while on display in London before the hosting of the World Cup finals.

Rumours exist of a failed blackmail plot to return the trophy but it was Pickles who grabbed all the glory when sniffing out a newspaper wrapped package containing the cup at the bottom of a hedge near his home.

Timmy - Famous Five

Timmy - Famous Five

Ok, we know Timmy isn't a real dog but he was an inspiration to many young children when they were growing up. What more could a child want back in the 60's; camping, adventures and a loyal dog with an almost telepathic relationship with his owner and an unerring ability to sniff out biscuits! Timmy, a definite plusbreed, must have been responsible for many children growing up to become dog lovers.

Celebrating mixed breed dogs

There are over two million mixed breed dogs in the UK but many people consider them inferior to purebreeds despite genetic evidence to the contrary. PlusBreeds is dedicated to celebrating, forwarding the cause and raising the profile of these wonderful pets.

Most people are not aware of the benefit or 'plus' of hybrid vigour on their pet. This is a genetic process whereby the first generation of two different breeds of dogs are inclined to lose some of the negative genes of their parents. The benefit carries on through future generations, resulting in dogs which are likely to be healthier and less highly strung than the original pedigree parents with a lessening of inbred genetic defects. So be proud of your plusbreed dog, it's very well bred!

Most plusbreed owners would never dream of owning any other type of dog. We all know how loving, intelligent and healthy plusbreeds can be. With their own personalities and traits allowing for wonderful relationships between owner and pet. We hope you enjoy our website and help us promote the good ownership of plusbreed dogs.
